BIGGIN HILL CHAPEL AND MUSEUM

Thursday, 15 June 2023 20:37

Any of my regular followers will know how much work and how many years I have put into my Research into René Mouchotte.  I’ve ended up with a huge pile of notes, photos, magazines etc. and didn’t know what to do with them.  Dilip Sarkar - who enabled the re-publishing of the Mouchotte Diaries (published November 2022) - suggested I give everything to the Biggin Hill Museum.  Biggin Hill was very prominent in René’s RAF Service life and where he celebrated, with Jack Charles, the downing of the 1000th Enemy plane.

I was very pleasantly surprised because I’d heard that the Iconic Chapel had been decommissioned etc.  Actually the Church is still fully operative but the Vestry is no longer operating as such and houses a very interesting exhibition of the work of the ATA during WW2.  So the Chapel is as it was when I visited in 2010- with the beautiful Altar, Reredos  and book of Remembrance bearing  René’s name.  It was a lovely feeling walking into the Chapel again after doing our filming in 2012.

Also visited the  new Biggin Hill Museum and was pleasantly surprised.  It is very well staged and covers WW2 from Anderson Shelters up to videos of some of our, sadly now deceased, great Veteran characters.

If you have an interest in WW2 it’s well worth a visit.
